Serenity & Rose Quartz Announced As Pantone’s Color of 2016

Pantone, the American company best known for its largely standardized Color Matching System, has released their Color of the Year. For 2016, Rose Quartz, a medium pink color, and Serenity, a medium blue shade, are projected to be reflected throughout fashion and design. This is the first year that Pantone has chosen two separate colors for the Color of the Year.
The Pantone Color of the Year is chosen by a secret committee made up of representatives from nations all over the world that makes their selection after much debate and deliberation. In addition to global input, the color choice is also influenced by the spirit of the times. It’s considered to be a symbolic selection that reflects what is currently happening in society. This is apparent in the committee’s choice of nominating two colors for this year’s winner.
The reason for the dual choice was deliberate. Movements in design and fashion have become significantly more poised towards gender equality and gender fluidity. In alignment with one of the top news stories of the year, the transition of Olympian Bruce Jenner into Caitlyn Jenner, the overarching concept of duality has been embraced all over the world.
According to Pantone, the combination of colors seemingly across the spectrum is intended to challenge traditional assumptions of color and the way that colors are associated with gender. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute wrote:
This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumers’ increased comfort with using color as a form of expression which includes a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged, and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.
Serenity and Rose Quartz, in particular, are noted as working with one another to embody tranquility and inner peace. Serenity is noted for its calming and relaxing effect. while Rose Quartz is seen as compassionate and composed. This is a direct challenge to the idea that the two colors have distinct associations that can’t be overcome.

Pantone’s colors have been known to show up on other products, including Sephora cosmetics and Keurig coffee makers, to name a few.
