Is Facebook Enough? A Look at Social Media Marketing.

May 19, 2016

We’re just going to say it- simply existing on social media is not enough for your brand. Having a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, or Snapchat account is only one part of the hurdle to successfully using these networks to make a substantial difference in your brand. Social media marketing is so important to businesses that entire departments are created in larger businesses aimed at attracting customers via social platforms, amping up engagement, and keeping users informed about events, products, and specials associated with their business.

Using Social Media Marketing For Your Business

It is undoubtedly important to have social media to help build your organic following on social media, but only signing up for these platforms is the very first step in launching a successful social media marketing campaign for yourself. In all likelihood, you do not have the budget to hire a full-time social media manager, and that’s okay! Just having an understanding of how social media can shape your business and taking the right steps to stay on top of your social media game can make the difference you need!

In 2014, over 87% of small businesses used social media as a marketing tool. Why? It’s valuable for marketing, developing trust and familiarity with your brand, speaking with customers, further developing your brand, and more!

Social media marketing consists of:

  • Posting photos of products, specials, and events to channels;
  • Creating stories about your brand through images and video;
  • Hashtagging relevant posts to attract new visitors;
  • Cross-promoting with businesses and channels;
  • Posting contests, games, giveaways, and other engaging channels;
  • Creating content to share on social channels;
  • Responding to customer comments and messages;
  • Starting conversations with those who like your product/service; and
  • Attending local events and promoting your pages;

Not all of these should be done every day, but they still should be actively promoted as often as possible. Why? Social media helps you find the audience for you, reaching users outside what may be a limited circle in your community is easier with the internet at your fingertips.

But I’m Too Small To Spend My Time on Social Media

It’s understandable that the idea of spending a ton of time on social media seems counterproductive to making your business successful. There are some valuable reasons why you should spend time actively engaging on these channels, however.

  • More people are exposed to what you’re doing
  • More visitors are reaching your website or storefront
  • Speaking with your audience can help you learn what people want
  • Interactions with customers ensure they’ll come back to you later
  • Comments and feedback can be easily acquired here
  • Rankings in search engines increase

The best thing about social media marketing is that it allows you to engage and create a relationship directly with the people who are using your brand. Simply creating pages to have them and not having an active role in their utilization and upkeep doesn’t help you or your brand. Taking the time to stay active can make a huge difference, and as a small business, these things matter!
