Many entrepreneurs assume grants are only for big corporations or companies with special connections, but that is not the case. Grants are available to all types of businesses, from new startups to established enterprises, and are meant to give small business owners the boost they need to succeed. While the application process can feel intimidating, the potential reward makes it worth the effort.

One of the greatest advantages of grants is that they provide funding without adding debt. Instead of worrying about loan payments or interest rates, entrepreneurs can reinvest profits into growth, hiring, and innovation. This makes grants a powerful tool for anyone focused on starting a new business or expanding a current one with a solid financial foundation.

West Virginia continues to support local entrepreneurs by offering programs that strengthen communities and encourage economic development. With the right preparation and persistence, you can find a grant that fits your goals and turn your business idea into a long-term success story.

What are small business grants?

When you take out a business loan from a bank, you have to pay it back with interest. That can get expensive quickly. If you go to a venture capitalist, you most likely will have to give up part of your business, and maybe even a say in how it’s run. Accepting loans from friends and family can be a quick way to ruin personal relationships and to add even more stress to running your company. But grants are different because you get the money without any of the pressure of paying it back.

Depending on the grant, you can use the money to help with all kinds of expenses, such as equipment, marketing, research, training, or even hiring new employees. For a startup, being able to afford what you need can be the difference between realizing your dream and seeing it disappear. And for an established business, grants are wonderful to take things to the next level.

There are a lot of benefits to business grants, but to get one, you’re going to need to jump through some hoops. Not only are grants competitive, but they also come with rules about who can qualify and how the grant money can be used. But don’t worry, it will be well worth the effort once you get that check in your hands.

West Virginia state-specific grants

Businesses in West Virginia can access a wide variety of grants. While West Virginia-specific grants are limited, there are a few that you may find useful. Below are some of them, but for the newest West Virginia-only grants, you will want to visit the WV Business Link website.

Vantage Ventures Accelerator Program

This 13-week accelerator program from the West Virginia University is for entrepreneurs and comes with a $10,000 grant, but top performers in the program may be able to receive more funding. The Vantage Ventures Accelerator Program offers hands-on support and educates founders on developing and launching products.

The program runs two cohorts per year, a September cohort and a January cohort, with 5 to 10 startups admitted each round. Applications for the September cohort are typically due in mid-December, applications for the January cohort open in the fall.

To qualify for a Vantage Ventures Accelerator Program grant, you must:

  • Have at least one equity-holding founder who lives in West Virginia (or is a student at a college or university in West Virginia).
  • Plan to create jobs with a business in West Virginia.
  • Have a business model that can scale up and competitively compete nationally and internationally.

While everyone who is eligible can submit a proposal, preference is typically given to those who:

  • Stand out from competing products and services.
  • Have more than one founder.
  • Led by someone with a proven track record of overcoming adversity and obstacles.
  • Headed by someone completely invested in the project by concentrating on it full-time.

For more information and to apply, check out the program’s website.

Farm and Food Mini Grants

These grants are offered through the West Virginia Farm and Food Coalition. The goal of these grants is to assist local farmers, as well as independent grocery stores and producers that stock or use locally grown products. Each grant is $10,000.

West Virginia Farmers Market Association Mini Grants

Anyone who owns a farmers market in West Virginia can benefit from these grants of $5000. The money can be used towards either infrastructure, such as coolers, display cases, structures, etc., or marketing materials to promote your market. Besides traditional farmers’ markets, the grant is also open to roadside stands, consignment, on-farm stands, mobile markets, and online sellers.

To qualify for a West Virginia Farmers Market Association Mini Grant, you must:

  • Be a member of the West Virginia Farmers Market Association.

The program runs annual cycles funded by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, typically opening in August and closing in September each year. The 2025 cycle ran August 8 through September 17, 2025, with awards announced in October 2025. The 2026 cycle has not yet been announced. For more information and to apply, check out the program’s website.

West Virginia First Small Business Growth Program

The West Virginia First Small Business Growth Program is a landmark new initiative signed into law during the 2026 legislative session, making $100 million in growth-stage capital available to West Virginia small businesses. The program is designed to address the critical gap between startup funding and the capital needed to truly scale, research shows that businesses outside major financial hubs rarely access the growth capital they need to reach long-term sustainability.

The program works by providing tax credits to investors who deploy capital into West Virginia small businesses through the program’s structure. Businesses access this growth capital by working with authorized capital investment firms that receive tax credit allocations under the program.

To apply for capital investment consideration, your business must complete the official program application through the West Virginia Department of Economic Development.

Federal grants available to West Virginia businesses

As a West Virginian small business owner, in addition to grants available in the state, you also have access to federal grants. These federal grants are provided by the US government, and they function similarly to state-level grants, except there is a lot more money available, and a ton more competition for them.

This section gives you a quick overview of a variety of federal programs that offer small business grants. Some of these programs are administered at the federal level, while others you need to access through the state. The four programs below are among the most popular, but you can find many more on the Grants.gov website.

Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program

These competitive grants are from the National Science Foundation and provide funding for small businesses in certain fields to bring new and exciting products to the market. Funding takes part in stages, starting with financial assistance to test a new product and continuing through its development cycle.

To qualify for an SBIR grant, you must:

  • Be a US for-profit company.
  • Employ fewer than 500 employees.
  • Be majority owned by a US citizen or permanent resident.
  • Have the capability to do the research and meet government contract requirements.

For more information and to apply, check out the SBIR.gov website.

Small Business Technology Transfer (STRR) Program

Another grant offered by the National Science Foundation is the STRR. These grants help to fund the cost for small businesses to team up with an institution to conduct product research in certain fields. Similar to the SBIR grant, the funding is available in stages based on the viability of the company’s product.

To qualify for a STRR grant, you must:

  • Be a US for-profit company.
  • Have fewer than 500 employees.
  • Be majority-owned by a US citizen or permanent resident.
  • Ensure that at least 40 percent of the research is done through the company and at least 30 percent of the research is conducted through a partner institution.

For more information on STRR and to apply, visit the related SBIR website.

Note: The SBIR and STTR programs lapsed on September 30, 2025, after Congress missed the reauthorization deadline. Both programs were reauthorized in March 2026 and are now active through September 30, 2031.

State Trade Expansion Program (STEP)

An existing company that wants to start exporting or expand its export business can benefit from this grant, which supplies up to $15,000.
